How is this a split-pot?

Ok here is the situation…

The only thing I’m a little baffled about is what we both had in our hands and the end result of that hand.

I am on the button with A10suited (Clubs). He is in early position with A5off. He leads out with a small raise. Gets to me and I three bet. Here we go….

The run out is: A 10 9 rainbow.

By the turn we are both all in for our tournament lives. Winner of this hand would have jumped to chip leader.

The turn brings us a 10. Can’t remember what suit b/c I was in utter shock with the final result). I am straight. I’ve got the BEST possible hand!!!

River brings us, you guessed it, the A.

I am new at poker I will admit. However, it makes NO sense to me that this was deemed to be a split-pot. I held both of the actual cards in the fullboat. The A & 10. He did not. He only held the A. I get that the kicker didn’t play but, I’ve actually got the WINNING hand. He ONLY had the A.

So, a little help from my friends? Go…

Can you please provide the tournament number?

You both have a full house, A,A,A,10,10…thus resulting in a split pot

Your 10 doesn’t matter in this hand. Your hand is made by using 5 of the 7 cards available to you (5 on table & 2 dealt to you). You don’t even have to use the 2 cards dealt to you to make the best 5 card hand.

Example: you’re dealt JQ and the board is 2,3,4,5,6.
Your hand is a 6 high straight.

I completely understand what you are saying, and it makes sense. However, my initial reply to you would be, then why would the cards in your hand ever matter. I’m just stuck on the fact that I held A10suited and he held A5off. I had the better hand. He was COMPLETELY was lucky with his A5OFF, and out of position, to boot.

Live and learn. Thanks to you both for the replies and clarifications. I do appreciate them. Best of luck to EVERYONE in the community!!!

You will forever run into this type of opponent. However, as the buyin increases. the amount of those types of players decrease.

Short term luck of others breaks many players. Seeing poor play often rewarded can start to convince one to play the same way. But the reason why there’s so few of this type of player in high stakes. Is that it looses more than most players can afford.

Remember in hold 'em, at least one of your hole cards will be used to create the winning hand.

Basically, both of you used your ace along with the A, A, 10, 10 that was on the board. Forget about your 10 that you had. Both players had a full house.

Some winning hands will use both of your cards. Other hands will just need one of your cards to combine with four others.

Hello Effie…

My apologies for my delayed response.

Going back thru my hands, I realized that this hand was actually NOT a tournament hand. I made a mistake. This hand was played in a 25NL cash game. Both of us started this hand with the full $25 or slightly above. I have attached a screenshot of the hand number, if that helps?

I confused this hand with a similiar hand that was played in a tournament that involved losing and getting bounced with myself and another player holding AA and a third player holding QQ and the result of that hand was decided on the river with a Q. No issues there. I clearly was beat Lolol!!!
